What Is Semax?
Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide based on the ACTH(4-7) fragment (Met-Glu-His-Phe) of adrenocorticotropic hormone, extended with the Pro-Gly-Pro (PGP) tripeptide sequence to enhance metabolic stability and blood-brain barrier penetration. The resulting compound — ACTH(4-7)PGP — is more resistant to enzymatic degradation than the parent ACTH fragment.
Preclinical research has investigated Semax primarily in neurological models: neuroprotection following ischaemic events, BDNF and NGF upregulation, serotonin and dopamine pathway modulation, and cognitive performance. It is frequently compared with Selank — another Soviet-derived neuropeptide with anxiolytic research applications — as part of the broader neuropeptide research literature.
