DSIP (delta sleep-inducing peptide) is a nonapeptide with the sequence Trp-Ala-Gly-Gly-Asp-Ala-Ser-Gly-Glu. It was isolated from rabbits in 1977 and named after the delta-wave EEG patterns reported in rabbits after intraventricular infusion of the synthetic peptide (Schoenenberger & Monnier, 1977).
Later research has not settled its role. A 2006 review noted that a DSIP gene, protein and possible related receptor had not been isolated, described the link between DSIP and sleep as poorly documented, and said its natural occurrence and biological activity remain obscure (Kovalzon & Strekalova, 2006). The name reflects the original animal experiments, not an established effect.
