Peptides for weight loss: how to read retatrutide results without losing the context

“Peptides for weight loss” covers very different substances and evidence. Retatrutide has clinical-trial results, but a trial result is not approval for an online product. Anyone searching “buy retatrutide” needs to distinguish the investigational medicine studied in trials from a vial marketed under the same name.

What is retatrutide?

Retatrutide is an investigational agonist of GIP, GLP-1 and glucagon receptors. Its research programme includes obesity and type 2 diabetes. The evidence should be read study by study, with the population, follow-up and statistical analysis kept visible. (Bellido et al., 2026)

Why do different articles quote different percentages?

The figures can come from different populations, durations and analysis methods. A percentage without those details can mislead even when the number itself was copied correctly.

Selected results, not a head-to-head comparison
Source Population and duration Selected reported result Interpretation limit
2023 phase 2 paper (Jastreboff et al., 2023) 338 adults with obesity or qualifying overweight; 48 weeks 24.2% mean reduction in the highest-dose group versus 2.1% with placebo. A result from a particular trial and analysis, not an individual prediction.
2026 TRIUMPH-2 paper (Bellido et al., 2026) 1,152 adults with obesity and type 2 diabetes; 80 weeks 18.8% mean reduction in the highest-dose group versus 5.1% with placebo, using the treatment-regimen estimand. A different population and analysis from the phase 2 result.
September 2026 sponsor announcement (Eli Lilly and Company, 2026) TRIUMPH-2; 80 weeks Headline efficacy figure of 20.8% in the highest-dose group. Do not mix this with the paper’s treatment-regimen figure as though they are the same estimate.

What is an estimand?

An estimand specifies the treatment effect a study aims to estimate, including how events such as stopping treatment are handled. Two analyses of the same trial may answer different questions. Read the methods before deciding that two percentages contradict each other or that the larger number is the “correct” one.

For a useful comparison, record the trial name, participant group, time point, treatment arm, comparator and analysis definition. Do not rank unrelated medicines by the largest percentage available in separate studies.

What about side effects and discontinuation?

TRIUMPH-2 reported gastrointestinal events more often with retatrutide than placebo. Hypotension and altered skin sensations were also more frequent, and discontinuations due to adverse events or death differed across groups. Investigators judged the reported deaths unrelated to the study intervention. A balanced account includes tolerability alongside weight change. (Bellido et al., 2026)

Can I buy retatrutide as an approved medicine in Australia?

The TGA’s 14 September 2026 advisory stated that retatrutide remained in clinical trials and had not been approved by the TGA or a comparable international regulator. It also reported testing a product sold as retatrutide that contained an undeclared active ingredient and no retatrutide. That investigation concerned a particular product; it is not a survey of all sellers. (TGA, 2026c)

A named ingredient on a retail label does not establish that the contents match a trial medicine. A study citation also does not establish the legal status of the product being sold. For personal care, discuss authorised treatment options and any relevant access pathway with a qualified practitioner.

What does a trustworthy comparison look like?

It reports meaningful outcomes and harms, labels sponsor announcements as such, separates historical and current findings, and makes the study population visible. It also says when the evidence cannot answer a question.

This is a selected evidence comparison checked on 20 October 2026, not a systematic review or a treatment recommendation. Its purpose is to make the numbers interpretable—not to turn trial averages into promises about personal results.
